Personal Essays

"It was the summer of 1998. All of my friends had internships in law firms and investment firms and other Very Important Places. I was an undecided major with no experience and an artistic bent so I applied to work at a bunch of art studios in New York City. On the cusp of accepting a somewhat dubious position at a soap-making studio, I got a response from an artist in France who needed a summer assistant – she was one of Andy Warhol’s “Underground Superstars.” Well that was it then. I was going to France. And that was the summer that I found love."

"Upon returning home, DeWitt was discouraged by what he thought to be a poor showing of interest in the magazine, given the number of subscription orders they received. But Lila saw things differently. Her enthusiasm persuaded her hesitant husband to go ahead, and five thousand copies of the first issue of Reader's Digest appeared in February 1922."

Short Stories

"As she placed her foot on the first step, anxiety prickled the back of her neck. She shook it off and went cautiously down the stairs. The room was dark and quiet. Everyone had retired in anticipation of the coming blizzard. Then she saw it. The new machine. It held more possibility than anyone in her rank had ever known. It was a risk going down this road, but she knew they had no choice. The valise that held the contents for the first experiment was heavy. It was an awkward choice for transport, but this silver valise, given to her by a predecessor,  had helped ease Tara's burden many times before as she slogged dutifully through her work, day in and day out. She was grateful to have it with her tonight."

Annie is currently at work on her novel, A Marvelous Coincidence. Its essence is coziness. The flavor one of the English countryside and warm blankets by the fire. She looks forward to sharing it with you soon.

"Maddy saw new lives for herself when she stood in bookshops like this one. They felt filled with possibility. Every life lived and shared in a book presented a new way of living that someone like Maddy could borrow and make her own."
